Everything Streaming

There are all sorts of reasons to change service providers. Years ago the most common reasons were poor customer service and reliability. Lately it seems that the driving factors to switch services have been licensing disputes between the networks and service providers which result in prolonged disruptions in programming. That, and simply the pure cost of cable TV. SO is there a better way to watch TV? YES! This does not necessarily mean “cutting the cord” because we still need your internet service. We just cancel the TV part… But before you call to cancel anything, you should try it first. There are two primary live streaming services, but many others are available with a more limited channel lineup. Costs vary. YouTube TV (different from YouTube) and Hulu Live TV are the two most popular services. They start at around $70 per month and premium channels like HBO and Showtime can be added à la carte. Another advantage is that these services can be paused or canceled anytime without a contract. Both services offer free trials that will allow you to operate the guide and test services before you commit, but they DO keep your card on file and will charge you unless you cancel before the trial period is over. What will you need to download the app and start streaming? Our preferred device is an Apple TV (it’s not a TV). It’s a little black box that you can download apps onto that looks exactly like the home screen of an iPhone or an iPad. We prefer the Apple TV because it is feature-rich and has a more robust processor and hardware specs than a Roku or a Fire TV Stick. However, if you don’t feel like spending the $149 on the best streaming device, the Fire Sticks are very reasonable at around $49! You would only need these devices if your TV was manufactured before, say, 2018. Most TVs made before then did not have built-in smart TV capabilities, and if they do, probably won’t have the processing power required to stream live TV from the internet. Too much information?
